Earth Day Reminds Us of How Much We Affect Our Planet

Earth Day Reminds Us of How Much We Affect Our Planet

According to President Čaputová, World Earth Day reminds us of the great impact of our activities on the planet and the environment in which we live.

The president emphasized that it was during the current pandemic that nature became a refuge to which we turned for encouragement. "We became even more aware of our vulnerability and close connection with nature. However, during hikes in our forests, we encountered not only nature’s beauty, but examples of human recklessness."

According to the president, while progressing on the path out of the crisis and towards economic recovery it will be important to strive to ensure that the transformation that awaits will be green, innovative and not just a return to the status quo in relation to nature. "Therefore, I am pleased that the green agenda will be an important part of the Recovery Plan and that the planned investments will help us to reduce emissions and create a better and healthier environment. In order to achieve genuine change, we must rely on the responsibility of individuals, as well as states and governments. Slovakia is committed to the common goals of the EU to become climate neutral by 2050 and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 55 percent by 2030. The agreement of European institutions on the final version of the Climate Law, which was reached yesterday and will enshrine our commitment to reduce emissions, is a significant step on this path."

But this is not only about the commitments of countries. The President believes that every individual and community should participate, as 10 to 20 years from now, our current actions towards the planet will be judged by the next generation.
