Kiska negotiated with French President

Kiska negotiated with French President

The wave of migration and the situation in Greece and Ukraine were the main topics of Friday’s meeting between the President of the SR, Andrej Kiska, and the President of France, François Hollande.

“As far as the wave of migration is concerned, I think that Mister President and I have very similar views regarding the introduction of quotas for European countries to receive immigrants and grant asylum. Quotas are not a solution to the problem,” said President Kiska after the discussions. “But I emphasized our country’s attitude, that we cannot refuse help to those whose lives are at risk. To these people, these families, we must show not only solidarity, but also truly help them.”

The French President is also considering the acceptance of refugees whose lives are in danger, this being part of European values: “These are refugees from Syria, Iraq, Eritrea. It is our task to accept them and this is a task we must all share.”

According to Hollande, economic migration should be solved through political cooperation with the countries concerned: “We cannot accept those immigrants who come to Europe via human smugglers.”

As far as Greece is concerned, the ministers of finance from the euro area countries did not reach an agreement in Luxembourg on Thursday; on Monday a special summit will be held in Brussels. “We don’t want any black scenarios in Slovakia. However, we expect the Greek government to realize that the time has come to make difficult but inevitable decisions for their future,” said President Kiska.

Hollande considers it essential for Greece to continue with discussions in the interest of a compromise solution. “This compromise solution must be based on European rules. In cooperation with Chancellor Merkel I will enforce continuing discussions.”

Andrej Kiska thanked President Hollande for the peace efforts in Ukraine. “We agreed on the importance of unity in the European Union.”

François Hollande praised Slovakia’s support in the preparation of the major climate summit in Paris at the end of the year. “I learnt that, among all the countries in the European Union, Slovakia has reduced greenhouse gas emissions the most significantly.”
