Kiska Given Prestigious City of London Honour

Kiska Given Prestigious City of London Honour

President Andrej Kiska was granted the prestigious honour of the Freedom of the City of London on Tuesday in the City of London.

Amongst the holders of this honour, first conferred around 1237, are Sir Winston Churchill, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Nelson Mandela, Margaret Thatcher, Diana, Princess of Wales, Bill Gates, Plácido Domingo, J. K. Rowling, Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman.

“This award of honorary citizenship is not often received by statesmen. I am delighted because it represents the understanding that every successful person should consider philanthropy. It is about giving back to society some of what they have received,” said President Kiska after the ceremony.

The awarding of the honorary citizenship of the City of London, the financial centre of the United Kingdom, is one of the longest-running ceremonies in the world still in existence. President Kiska was awarded it as a symbol of the increasing importance of economic and political relations between the United Kingdom and the Slovak Republic.

The ceremony was preceded by a meeting with the Lord Mayor of London, Alderman Alan Yarrow. The meeting focused on economic development and British investment in Slovakia.

Economic development was also the topic of a panel discussion as part of Startup Grind, an event the president attended in the early evening. The discussion focused on presenting Slovakia as a country with potential for innovative companies, the development of business ecosystems and creating new companies. The president was accompanied in Great Britain by representatives of the Slovak business community.
