President Thanks Our Allies in Support of Our Defence

On Thursday 24 March 2022, exactly one month from the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, President Čaputová participated in an extraordinary NATO summit in Brussels.  

The president stated that she felt the solidarity and unity of all of the allies at the negotiating table. According to her, this was true not only regarding the condemnation of Russian aggression, but in the joint determination to continue to support Ukraine and enable it to defend itself. “I thanked our allies for supporting our own defence: six of them will defend our security directly in Slovakia within the framework of the enhanced forward presence.”

According to the president, it is time to take a stand. “Vladimir Putin has gone beyond all acceptable boundaries by his aggression and we must react to this in everything that we do within the framework of our collective defence. For this reason, we have called upon every country of the world, including China, to join us in condemning the steps of President Putin and to refrain from doing anything which could further support his actions.” 

The leaders also decided to extend the term of office of General Secretary Jens Stoltenberg for another year.
