The President took part in the Summit for Democracy

The President took part in the Summit for Democracy

On Thursday 9 December 2021, President Zuzana Čaputová took part in the online Summit for Democracy. The aim of the summit was to bring forces together to stop the erosion of democracy and the rule of law around the world. Next year, the summit plans to meet again in person.

The President took part in two panels at the summit, where together with other leaders, she presented her visions and commitments for stabilising and democracy and democratic institutions and improving their quality.  The priorities of the Slovak Republic that the President highlighted during the summit included judicial reform, the fight against corruption, transparency in commercial transactions and the freedom of the media. The Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic Ivan Korčok attended the summit together with the President.

A common theme in leaders’ speeches on the weakening of democratic regimes was the spread of hoaxes and disinformation through social media. “The international community must adopt a more intensive approach to fighting hybrid threats and the role of social media in spreading lies and disinformation,” the President said during the summit.

“A key element for the sustainability of democracy is transparency as a natural tool for controlling all areas and all levels of public life,” so support for media freedoms and investigative journalism in third countries is becoming an important part of the Slovak Republic’s current strategy for supporting human rights and development cooperation.

The President also took part in a discussion on preventing and combatting corruption hosted by the US finance minister Janet Yellen during which she presented specific anti-corruption measures that the Slovak Republic has implemented. One of these is unique on the world stage – the Slovak register of beneficial owners. In her speech, she reflected on the use of special institutions to handle complex and serious cases of corruption and the importance of transparency in selecting key judicial functionaries. “Since corruption recognises no borders, international cooperation in preventing and combatting corruption is just as important as cooperation in the fight against climate change,” the President said during the online discussion. The president’s speech to the Summit for Democracy in English can be found in the English section Speeches.
