The President received the Silver Commemorative Medal of the Czech Senate

The President received the Silver Commemorative Medal of the Czech Senate

On 16 November 2021, the President received the Silver Commemorative Medal of the Czech Senate in person from Miloš Vystrčil in Prague.

The President was honoured for her extraordinary service to the truth, freedom, political culture, and the rule of law. In her speech at the historic Wallenstein Palace, where the award ceremony took place, the President highlighted the threats currently facing democracy and its institutions, not only in our two states. “They are being undermined by egotism, populism and extremism.  They must also deal with disinformation, propaganda, and the negative effects of social media. These seek to disrupt the things that are most essential for democracy – people’s trust in each other and social cohesion. This is something we must defend and continuously restore, by finding the balance between freedom and responsibility. We cannot afford to tolerate intolerance.”

The President said that she was sharing her award with many nameless but heroic defenders of democracy, without whom the transition to freedom, pluralism, and liberal democracy after 1989 could not have succeeded. “They stood on the squares and were a part of change, even though their names and faces are unknown. Even today, there are many heroes and heroines who are working in the same way to prevent democracy from sinking into hatred, populism, and apathy. Now more than ever, it is vital that these people see politicians as their allies and not as obstructions.”

She likewise saw the Silver Commemorative Medal of the Senate as recognition of the friendship and good relations between Slovakia and Czechia. While she was in Prague, the President also met with the new Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic, Marketa Pekarova Adamova, and commemorated the 32nd anniversary of the Velvet Revolution at the commemorative plaque on Národní Street. Immediately on arriving in Prague, the President visited the Czech President Miloš Zeman. She visited him in the Central Military Hospital, where he is receiving treatment. She presented her best wishes for his good health, strength, and a speedy recovery in person.
