President Honours Victims of the War in Ukraine

On Monday 4 April 2022, President Čaputová commemorated the anniversary of the liberation of Bratislava by laying a bouquet of flowers at the Victory monument.    

Despite the atrocities which we can see in Ukraine and the cruelty of the Russian army there, the president believes that we should not be blinded and transfer the guilt of the present to the past, as our respect for the past cannot be perceived as legitimizing the current regime in Kremlin. “Our capital was liberated on 4 of April 1945 as part of the Bratislava-Brno operation, in which 28 Soviet and 14 Romanian divisions participated. Over 700 soldiers lost their lives here. The heroism and assistance of those who contributed to our liberation and the defeat of fascism in WWII will always remain worthy of our memories and our thanks.”

The president also lit a candle in front of the Ukrainian embassy for those who will not live to see liberation - the Ukrainian men, women and children killed, tortured and executed by Russian soldiers in the town of Bucha. “I believe that the images of cruelty coming from several Ukrainian towns shall not go unpunished and will unite the international community in even greater solidarity and assistance to Ukraine.”
