The president responds to recent news

The Gorilla case, the recordings from which were released today, has become synonymous with political corruption for a whole political generation. The difficulty of coming to terms with this case is demonstrated by the fact that five successive governments have failed to bring it to a resolution. The conversation between former Prosecutor General Dobroslav Trnka and Marian Kočner and the transcripts from Threema point to an unprecedented abuse of justice. Many of the actors in these cases still remain in positions that demand unquestionable personal integrity and a dedication to serving justice. Once again, we are witnessing a situation in which serious cases are only investigated when the media publishes substantial information and provokes public outrage.

The public is oversaturated with information about the abuse of power and urgently needs to know what the police, prosecutor’s office and courts are doing. In the coming days, I will therefore be meeting with the minister of the interior, the president of the police force and the management of the prosecutor general’s office to ask them questions about the current state of affairs. I will urge them to take measures that will demonstrate, without a shadow of a doubt, that all the law enforcement bodies are dedicated wholly and entirely to cleansing the judiciary, investigating the cases and punishing the guilty. The elections are not far away and it is very important that voters should go to the polls with faith in justice and the rule of law, and not with frustration rooted in scepticism about our ability to deal with scandals that undermine the rule of law.
