The words of Václav Havel about how truth and love must prevail over lies and hatred are as truthful today as they were 30 years ago.  

President Čaputová uttered these words at the Forum 2000 conference which was held for the 25th time in Prague.  Her video speech on Tuesday 12 October 2021 opened the final panel discussion of the conference’s second day, entitled FORMING A GLOBAL COALITION FOR DEMOCRACY.  The session’s featured speakers included  Sviatlana Tsikhanouskay, a former presidential candidate and a representative of the Belorussian opposition, Damon Wilson, executive vice president of the Atlantic Council, British historian and journalist, Timothy Garton Ash, and Farida Nabourema, a Togolese writer and human rights activist. 

The president stated, among others, that the role of contemporary political leaders is to search for truth and to stand against lies and hatred.  “We must protect and sustain liberal democracy – the only type of democracy there is.”
